Bolder, Brighter...and Bluer

Everyone has a colour they always fall back on. The one
colour that is certain to suit your skin tone or gives you that extra boost of
confidence. Everyone has a colour.
My colour usually black, but when I’m trying to encourage myself to let a
little colour into my life, my colour is 100% blue. I try to stay away from
navy blue (because it’s a little too close to black), so bright blue is totally
my comfort colour.
I picked up this dress from TK Maxx in their end-of-summer
sale for only £4 and it’s a piece I’ve had to pluck up the courage to wear. Mainly
because it’s a unique addition to my wardrobe, my style is usually pretty straightforward
and never over-the-top. Although I wouldn’t go as far as saying this dress is
over-the-top, it’s definitely a little different for me.
The first thing I love are the flared sleeves, I haven’t
worn flared sleeves since I was about 8! They’re just so much fun to wear, I
spun around about 30 times before we actually got these photos taken. Patterns
aren’t usually my thing either, I’m a pretty basic person (no word of a lie) so
I dress quite simple when it comes to an everyday look. It was actually the
patter (ft. colour) that drew me to this dress which was sat in a jungle of
sale items and out-of-season styles. Cold shoulder tops are a new love of mine,
after wearing this
yellow top during the summer, I grew more confident in wearing them!
Despite summer being over, I’m still totally loving this discount dress. The colour is certainly my new safe colour, and although it’s bright I feel comfortable rocking it! Black accessories are idea for a dress like this because I didn’t want anything to take away from the pattern or colours. A white bag and shoes would run the risk of clashing with the sleeves and I’d never want that!

Lace-Ups and Leather
14 September 2016
West Yorkshire, UK
I’m not big on cold weather, that’s probably the only down
side to the summer ending. However, autumn means plenty more opportunities to
wear my leather jacket, and I will always jump at the chance. I’m very passionate
about leather jackets, as you will be able to tell over the next few months,
and I can’t wait to dust off my collection and add to it.
I’ve always had a weird love for jackets, they’re so much
fun to wear. It’s nice to be able to change the vibe of a whole look with one
item, like a coat of jacket. Sometimes I can wear a leather jacket in a really
casual setting, but also to something more formal. On the other hand, I can
find blazer-style jacket or a collared khaki coat that is super stylish and
little more chic. It all depends on my mood. For most days, a leather jacket
will do for me, usually faux leather because it’s way cheaper and just as good.
I have recently become obsessed with these lace-up block
heels from Next. Block heels are a big love of mine because they’re much easier
to walk in that the barely-there sandal or even wedges. I never go for heels
that are too high, in case I want to wear them in a casual setting like today. The
first thing I was drawn to was the style, lace-up is on trend and easy to wear
(I have a weird struggle with buckles). When the shoes arrived at my home, I
realised they’re actually faux suede *heart eyes*, which always looks awesome
against contrasting fabrics like denim. Because the colour is neutral, all the
attention doesn’t have to be on the shoes and I can wear something with an
eye-catching pattern, like this cotton tank top.
I managed to bag this top for £3 in the TK Maxx sale and
have been bargain hunting in their stores ever since. It’s easily one of my
favourites, simply because there’s so much stuff! I got a playsuit for £5 and
another knitted jumper for £2! I was so excited about the new buys I tweeted
around twenty times in five minutes, my followers were so confused. My top was
a fun piece to add to the top over my favourite bright denim jeans and Topshop
handbag.

Totally Thrifted
21 August 2016
Alton, UK
I recently spent a whole day at Alton Towers, also known as my favourite place on Earth, and I always want to wear something comfortable but inexpensive as I'm the one girl that loses a jacket (or a shoe) whenever I go anywhere. I managed to put together an entire outfit (minus the accessories) from thrift shopping and I have to talk about how much I'm falling in love with it.
I haven't bought too many things from thrift shops in the past because I never grew up shopping in them, and would always go on shopping trips to the enormous centres in the nearest city, which usually don't include local charity and thrift shops. I actually live in a tiny village in West Yorkshire, and there are charity shops everywhere; and as you know, charities are my life. Literally. I hear a lot of bloggers talk about thrifting and I decided it's time to really make the plunge, digging around in those shops is a lot like shopping in TK Maxx, it takes time and real dedication - there's so much stuff!
Alton is pretty far from where I live, so number one thing was a comfy outfit. To get there I had to set off at 06:00, not my favourite time of the day, but as a new-found morning person it's not the worst. I knew I would sleep in the car because heat + nice tunes + rocking motion = Anika asleep. I wanted to wear jeans on the trip because I absolutely loathe leggings and cropped or really short tops and I had already fallen in love with this poppy-printed cotton tank top I'm wearing. Black jeans are my new go-to, so of course, I looked in twelve thrift and charity shops until I found some! The ones I got were some vintage super-stretch jeans (sadly the label is faded) but I'm so glad the colour is still there! For me, that shows the great quality.
My hoodie was a little too big, but that's ideal for me as oversized clothing is my total weakness. Comfort is number one for rollercoasters so a cosy grey number is perfect! The weather always varies, we're in the UK, what else is going to happen? So I needed something I could tie around my waist or stuff in my bag when the sun decided to appear. Luckily it did make a small appearance and brightened the day. There's only one water ride left at Alton Towers (BOO!) and it's still likely you end up drenched. Although there's always that one person who never gets wet and I need to figure out their method because I'm the complete opposite. Anyway, I knew a cotton zip-up would dry off quickly, especially if the sun is out, and it happens to pair with the rest of my outfit pretty well!
Overall, I'm loving thrift shopping, it could be my new thing! Have you every thrifted? What did you get?
Nighty Night Shirt
28 July 2016

Today’s outfit is all about this men’s suit shirt I bought
absolutely ages ago, and haven’t let go of since. I’ve always been a fan of
shirts, although in 2012, I wore way too many check shirts and now I’m not too
keen on them. Still, I’ll always be a fan of the oversized look and this shirt
is perfect for that.
I can be pretty lazy when it comes to getting dressed. Sometimes
there are days where I really don’t want to put any effort into my appearance,
and some days when I just don’t care.
A huge shirt is perfect for that kind of mood. With most of my outfits, I hate
to feel weighed down so men’s cotton shirts are ideal. I like women’s shirts
too, however they’re built with the female body in mind, so have a slight curve
for the waist, whereas men’s shirts and tops are usually just straight down the
sides which is what I like. During a shopping spree, it’s just so easy to drift
off into the men’s section and find way better items that some of the pieces in
the ladies’ section.
I have a habit of buying clothes that are too big, and today
is no different. With most clothes, I prefer them to be loose-fitting, but with
shirts, I go way over the top. I can’t help it! I literally want them to flow
in the wind. Also, the bigger the shirt, the skinnier my legs look so that’s
always a plus. I picked jeans and shoes that would match my look, my shoes in
particular being a new favourite. I’ve had them for a really long time, but
recently re-found them during a closet cleanout and found them in tip top
shape! I’m so happy I discovered them again as they’ll be perfect for Sunday’s
trip to Alton Towers.

Hello Sunshine
7 July 2016
Eldwick, West Yorkshire
There’s something about the sunny weather that makes
everything better. I could be in the worst mood, one of those days where
everything is going wrong, but a little bit of sun makes the mood a lot less
destructive and I can actually think clearly – maybe even smile a little bit. I
love sitting in the sun, absorbing rays and just taking everything in. Despite
the hay fever, I find summer quite relaxing and it’s becoming my new favourite
season. This year, I wanted to try adding more colours in my wardrobe, and one
colour I haven’t worn in a very long
time is yellow.
I don’t like loads of attention on me, which is strange to
say seen as though I stand in pathways and take photos of my outfit to be
published on the internet. Still, I really don’t like a lot of eyes on me, and
find that wearing darker colours puts that aspect of anxiety at ease. For me,
wearing yellow means more attention. It’s naturally an eye-catching colour, no
matter what the shade and is one I used to actively avoid. I think yellow goes
pretty well with my skin tone, well I’m hoping it does because I kinda like it
now. This yellow cold shoulder top was bought from Tesco back when they had the
F&F website. I was on a mission to brighten up my look, but didn’t want to
spend £300 on a t-shirt. This top was only £12 at the time (sadly it’s out of stock,
I haven’t seen it since) and it’s made really well. The quality of the fabrics
is really good, it’s not just two pieces of polyester thrown together. It has a
strong lining to ensure the shirt isn’t seen-through, and adjustable straps. I was
actually quite surprised because Tesco isn’t known for being the hottest
clothing store on the high street – it’s where I go to buy my favourite cereal.
I was hesitant on keeping the top because it is very bright,
and seems to get brighter in sunlight; but then I was reminded that’s exactly
the reason I need it. It becomes the subject and centre of an outfit with
minimal effort, and is remarkably easy to dress around. I used to think bright
colours were a no no for me, but maybe it’s something I need to be a lot more
open to.
