Subtle Sheer

Sheer fabrics and pieces are a huge summer trend that I think may also carry on through autumn. There's a lot of sheer looks on the runway at the moment, and I've seen plenty of pieces in high street stores and on television. I think there's so much you can do with this fabric because it's versatile and comes in so many different colours and patterns. I think it's excellent for layering, and I quite like it with a lace pattern too. I bought this bomber in a huge sale Next had recently and I absolutely love it. I only own two bomber jackets and they aren't really thick and puffy but this one may be my favourite. It is black, which is a colour I have been trying to avoid but I can't help it. I love that this jacket has sheer sleeves because they're really subtle. The dark colour helps, but I think it's a great way to incorporate the sheer trend into an outfit piece and it stands out against most bomber jackets I've seen. This jacket also has an element of elegance, so it could be worn to a more formal even rather than just for everyday style. The dark colour is beneficial to making it so versatile because black goes with just about every colour in a wardrobe.

Quality Quilt

6 August 2014

About two years ago, a huge trend broke out, especially in schools, where people were wearing quilted jackets. Most people chose the Barbour brand of coats which are waterproof and also really high quality. Eventually, high street shops caught on and they were all selling these coats. Being totally honest, I absolutely hated this trend. I hated quilt and the pattern just frustrated me. This may have been because I was going through a phase of going against everything that was on trend because it was 'out of the box' and 'unique'. Despite my total disapproval for the look, I saw this jacket in Next and it may have just changed my mind. I still don't think I'll be buying one of the waterproof and puffier coats any time soon, but this really cosy cotton/polyester/viscose jacket has gained my approval. I think what I likes most about it is that the quilt effect isn't as obvious, it's actually quite subtle but I do like how the quilt causes this jacket to stand out from any other bomber jacket. I cannot express enough how soft and comfortable this jacket is, and the colour is a lighter grey which means I can pair it with quite a few items in my closet. It has been the perfect jacket for the sudden change in weather as it's not cold enough for a coat, but not warm enough to go out without a coat. I really like that it has pockets and I actually bought this a size bigger than my size so that I could layer underneath if needed. This bomber is a new favourite in my wardrobe and isn't too think to pair with jumpers or long-sleeved shirts. I've found it really easy to style even though I'm not 100% sold on the fabric. What do you think of quilted jackets and coats?

Statement Static

5 August 2014

Whenever I feel like my outfit is a little 'boring' I always try to add one unique piece as a statement piece to spice it up. I chose this fabric from a local material warehouse very close to wear I live. It immediately caught my eye because of the unique pattern as well as texture and feel of the fabric. I'm lucky to live in an area of the UK famous for it's textiles and a mother who's a fashion designer so I can customise my own wardrobe. This fabric is cotton jersey which is perfect for me because it's cosy and soft fabric and it's stretchy too. I knew immediately that this fabric shrinks sometimes when washed so I actually had it made a little bigger so I could wear it a few times without it getting too small. I often wear this top as a statement piece because the 'static' looking effect on it stands out against the darker colours in the rest of the outfit. It's also only black and white, so this top could be a cheat way to making an outfit seem a lot more exciting without including a wide range of colour. I paired this stretchy shirt with my favourite skinny jeans, hi-top suede shoes and an oversized bag with stud detail.

My Other Bag is Designer

I usually go for bags with loads of pockets, plenty of space to keep it organised and usually small and leather. But while shopping in the Next sale, I came across this bag and I just couldn't resist. I actually have loads of canvas bags, and quite a few cotton tote bags, but I never carry them because they don't have any pockets and can get all floppy if they're not reasonably full. I really like this canvas bag because the cotton is a lot thicker than most of my others which means it doesn't get too floppy or lose it's shape. You can always see the text on the side, which is what drew me to the bag in the beginning. In there today, I'm carry a few notebooks and all my basic handbag essentials. However, the only downside to these bags is that I can put my phone in them. I'm super protective over my iPhone, I won't even let it out of the case out of fear of the screen or back breaking. So with this bag, I often have to wear a jacket with a place for my phone or my favourite charcoal jeans which have deep pockets in them. Another downside to these bags is that you can only carry them in the sunshine or during dry weather because they won't be helpful in the rain. But this does make them perfect for days out in the sun for picnics and the beach because they are spacious and light. This bag is one I'll definitely be keeping and adding to my collection; what do you think of canvas totes?

Beach Blues

2 August 2014

This time last year, I was already packing all my favourite summer items to head out to Salou, Spain. It was my first ever beach holiday, in fact my first family holiday since I was only 9 years old and I went to Paris. I've been to many other places around the world, such as Switzerland and all over Europe, but never spent a lot of time on a real beach. There are beaches in England such as Scarborough and Blackpool, but going in the sea there is like a fight for your life. Not only must you avoid getting hypothermia, you also have to wear a jacket most of the time because the English sun isn't warm enough to heat the sand so it's not much different to sitting on solid concrete. When I arrived in Spain, the first thing I did was go to the beach by our hotel. Salou is in the south of Spain so it's extremely warm and full of different beaches. It was really a holiday to remember, not a lazy one where I laid in the sun all day, but I went to PortAventura (going on some historic and record breaking rollercoasters) and even toured the markets which was so much fun. In honour of my fun-filled holiday last year, I'm wearing a kaftan even though the sun isn't blazing. I've found them really comfortable to wear this summer, whether it's over clothes of a bikini - they're super simple to slip on and keep cool. To finish the look, I'm wearing these skin-coloured gladiator sandals that I absolutely love because I've had them for quite a while and they're still going strong.
